Frequently asked questions

You've got questions. We've got answers.

What is Philosophy?

Philosophy means the "love of wisdom." In the Platonic tradition, it is a way of life that seeks truth, virtue, and union with the Divine.

What is Platonism?

Platonism is a spiritual philosophy based on the teachings of Plato. It teaches that reality has a higher, intelligible order and that our soul can rise toward that truth.

What is the goal of the Platonic life?

To purify the soul, contemplate truth, and return to union with the Divine Good.

What is the soul?

The soul is the true self; immortal, rational, and divine in origin. It temporarily descends into the body and seeks to return to its divine source.

Why are we here?

We are here to grow in wisdom and virtue, to remember our divine nature, and to ascend back toward the Good.

What is spiritual practice in this tradition?

It includes study, self-examination, meditation, dialectic (philosophical dialogue), and ethical living

What does daily practice look like?

Are you Christians?

No. Platonism predates Christianity by centuries, and the Platonic Path carries forward the older philosophical and religious tradition. We honor God and the immortal gods as central to the divine order of reality.

We respect Jesus as a great teacher and example of a purified soul who sought wisdom and virtue. Yet we do not regard him as God. For us, he is one among many inspired souls in history who are worthy of study, but not the center of our faith.

The Platonic Path is not a Christian church, but a revival of the ancient way of philosophy as a sacred path, open to all who seek truth, beauty, and goodness.

Do you worship the gods?

Yes, but in a way rooted in philosophy as well as tradition. We honor God, the source of all being and unity, and we honor the immortal gods as powers and presences who reflect the divine order in the cosmos.

For us, worship is a turning of the soul toward what is higher, eternal, and life-giving. In the Platonic Path, we pray, give thanks, and make offerings as acts of reverence to the divine.

Our devotion to the gods is part of our pursuit of the Good: by honoring them, we bring our souls and our community into harmony with the eternal order.

What if I don't understand everything?

That’s okay. The path is gradual. What matters is sincere effort, love of truth, and a desire to grow.
